What is Josei?
Josei (女性) is a genre of manga (manhwa & manhua too!) and anime targeted at adult women, typically featuring more mature themes, realistic romance, and complex character relationships. It often explores topics such as career struggles, family life, and deeper emotional or psychological themes. While romance is a common notion, it tends to be portrayed with more nuance, often addressing issues like infidelity, divorce, or the challenges of long-term relationships. Beyond romance, Josei also delves into friendships, family dynamics, and self-discovery, sometimes incorporating darker or more introspective narratives.

Kodomo (子供) – Aimed at young children, with simple stories and lessons. Examples: Doraemon, Anpanman, Pokémon.
Shounen (少年) – Aimed at young boys (typically ages 12-18). Often features action, adventure, and coming-of-age stories. Examples: Naruto, One Piece, My Hero Academia.
Shoujo (少女) – Aimed at young girls (typically ages 12-18). Focuses on romance, emotions, and relationships. Examples: Sailor Moon, Fruits Basket, Cardcaptor Sakura.
Seinen (青年) – Aimed at adult men (18+). Often has more complex, darker, or psychological themes. Examples: Berserk, Vinland Saga, Ghost in the Shell.
Josei (女性) – Aimed at adult women (18+). Deals with realistic romance, careers, and life struggles. Examples: Nana, Paradise Kiss, Honey and Clover.
Common Themes in Josei
- Realistic Romance – Unlike shoujo, which often has idealized love stories, josei explores complex and mature relationships with real-world challenges like heartbreak, infidelity, marriage, and divorce.
- Career & Independence – Many josei stories focus on women balancing their work, ambitions, and personal lives, sometimes dealing with office politics, sexism, or workplace romance.
- Family & Friendship – Some series highlight relationships beyond romance, such as deep friendships, motherhood, or family struggles.
- Psychological & Emotional Depth – Josei stories often portray complex emotions and character growth, sometimes with heavy drama or introspective storytelling.
- More Mature Content – Some josei works include explicit themes such as sexuality, abuse, or dark psychological elements, but not all do.
Differences Between Josei and Other Genres
- Josei vs. Shoujo – Shoujo is often idealistic, lighthearted, and full of romance tropes (love triangles, school crushes), whereas josei is more realistic, bittersweet, and grounded in adult life.
- Josei vs. Seinen – Seinen is aimed at adult men and often features action, sci-fi, or psychological thrillers. While josei may include darker themes, it typically focuses on emotional depth and relationships from a female perspective.
- Josei vs. Shounen & Seinen Romance – Romance in shounen/seinen can be wish-fulfillment-heavy (harem, fanservice), while josei tends to be more emotional and character-driven.

Josei in Anime vs. Manga
While josei manga is relatively popular and widespread, anime adaptations are rare compared to shounen, shoujo, or seinen. This is because anime production studios tend to favor genres with larger audiences (like shounen).
That said, josei anime often have strong storytelling, well-developed characters, and emotional impact, making them a favorite for viewers who want something more mature and grounded.
